Levelling up . . . Free-styling with RhyMinister on Instagram

The RhyMinister has launched his very own Instagram Live on Free-Styling and the Art of Rhyme.

Last Thursday, with an audience of about 50, he used the time to focus on coping mechanisms during this time, mental health in general and rap free-styling advice. People dropped words for him to freestyle on the spot and he showed why he is known as the rhyme minister.

He said the Live went better than he expected. “It made me feel good about the progress that I am making as a free-styler so I am very grateful about my live sessions.”

The artiste whose real name is Keoma Mallett said the Instagram Lives have encouraged him to express himself and to realise his problems with free-styling was because he needed to read a lot more and study the art.

“I am very excited because that stage gives me encouragement to practice my art as a rapper and artist. As someone who has been around for a while, I have been encouraging others and these Lives help me to show others support and to share their lives as well.”

RhyMinister also spoke to mental health and steps he took to deal with depression. “Being honest with myself, I am finding ways to be patient with myself and to find reasons to smile. Even recently I have been exercising and I feel a lot more energetic.

“I am always trying to find ways to keep my mind sharp, so I do a lot of reading and I watch a lot of TED Talks, and I recently helped a friend who was dealing with teacher burnout. I was able to help her in terms of how I dealt with my depression,” he said.

Even though he is capitalizing on the online stage, he hopes to do a lot more live performances.

“I expect that performance would become a more central part of my life. With the amount of talent that I have, I have to do a lot more with it. It is about getting out and doing my show,  The Art of Rhyme, and I would like to mentor a lot more. I have to position myself in a way that when it comes to performing, my name is there,” the artiste said.

RhyMinister even spoke of his second love, which is computer coding.

“I would love to have established myself as a tutor in coding. I have been coding for a long time even though my confidence was not always there.”
