A hand of hope . . . Shon meets the needs of the vulnerable

Entrepreneur Shon Cummings has been working with the Muslim community in recent weeks to ensure impoverished Barbadians have access to basic food and necessities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shon Cummings told Barbados TODAY that through the joint effort, 450 hampers have been distributed and another 250 are expected to be handed out this weekend.

“It is the Muslim community that has led from the front when it comes to hampers being giving out but extra special thanks should go to Supreme Auto. Supreme Auto played a pivotal role in the execution of the project in collaboration with Recession Tyres.

“I can attest to the fact that people have inboxed me with a thousand needs and we can only do as much as we could. Sometimes we go all over Barbados to drop hampers to specific persons. It is sad to see the amount of calls and messages I receive,” Cummings said.

Cummings said though his team was not looking to be praised for the work they have been doing, from their interactions with those in need, they know their contribution is necessary at this time since many are struggling to make ends meet.

He said one business owner involved in the effort has committed to contribute to the drive until the pandemic is over.

The businessman said he was pleased that the videos circulating on social media showing him distributing hampers have received scores of likes and shares. He said he made the decision to use social media as a tool to encourage others who may be financially stable at this time, to give what they can to help the drive to continue to reach the growing needs of families.

“The videos are specifically done and uploaded on specific days to bring awareness to the plight. Our aim is to help as many families as possible,” he said.

However, Cummings noted that while it was not always possible to deliver hampers to people as soon as a request has been made

He explained there was a process to follow that includes accumulating the items for packages and then distributing them. anestahenry@barbadostoday.bb
