Elderly woman dies after freak accident

 

A 74-year-old woman died this afternoon on the compound of the Oistins Fish Market, Oistins, Christ Church in what police have described as a freak accident.

The victim has been identified as Rita Hunte of Upper Carters Gap, Christ Church.

According to lawmen, around 3:50 p.m, a 54-year-old man who was parked on the northern side of the car park was about to drive when the vehicle accelerated across the car park and struck another car before mounting the sidewalk and colliding with Hunte and her companion Dorothy Hall, 63,  of Upper Carters Gap, Christ Church.

The two elderly women were sitting under a wooden structure where fish vendors ply their trade.

Hunte was pinned onto a wooden post.

She was subsequently transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) by ambulance with severe injuries including compound fractures to both feet and injuries to her lower torso. She died at the hospital.

Meanwhile, Hall suffered injuries to her right foot. She was also transported by ambulance to the QEH.

The driver of the car, whose name has not been disclosed, did not suffer any injuries.

Police are continuing investigations.
