Charles F Broome Memorial Primary holds virtual graduation ceremony

The 2020 graduates at Charles F Broome Memorial Primary bade farewell in a virtual graduation ceremony on Friday. They were urged to accept the changes that will come their way throughout the journey of life.

Delivering remarks during the ceremony, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education Senator Dr Rommel Springer told the students that as they enter another critical phase in their lives, there are a number of important factors that they must keep in mind, including embracing the challenge of change.

“A good example of change is the current pandemic that the world is currently going through that has resulted in a change in the way we work, shop, communicate and even teach. Over the past few months you have been forced to take classes at home and use technology like Google Classroom and Google Meet to conduct your classes.

“But you have adapted and adjusted and you are here today as proud graduates. So as you transition from primary school to secondary school expect a string of changes, do not be afraid, this is the time for you to be bold and to be brave, but more importantly to be vigilant and to be wise. These changes give you a chance to learn more about yourselves, to examine your strengths and weaknesses, and to explore what you really want out of life,” he said.

Dr Springer also commended teachers for their hard work and commitment over the years.

He told the educators that even though they were forced to work in a COVID-19 environment, which did not always appear to be conducive to teaching and learning, especially under conditions that were not always the best, the fact that the students are graduating, is testimony to hard work and commitment.

Delivering the Principal’s Report for the academic year 2019-2020, Principal Dr Monica Walton, asked parents to continue to celebrate the accomplishments of their children, spend quality time with them, and to be there for them when they fall short of their goals, while making a great effort to work with the teachers at their child’s new schools.

Speaking directly to the graduates, Dr Walton urged them to embrace attributes such as tolerance, respect, empathy, positive attitude, trust, and success.

“This moment is your invitation to use your primary education to create positive thoughts, which in turn will create positive actions. Develop the habit of sewing positive seeds and do not be afraid to take risks. Challenge yourself and do not downgrade your dreams to fit today’s reality. Don’t let the new normal be an excuse to stand still. The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” Dr Walton said. (AH)
