Accused with alleged “natural tendency” for stealing remanded

A man accused of two break-ins has been remanded to prison for 28 days after the Crown objected to his bail.

Jason Omar Mason, of Browne’s Gap, Sargeant’s Village, Christ Church is accused of entering the home of Dennis Godding as a trespasser yesterday and stealing $1 451 in items including eight bottles of assorted alcoholic beverages, 15 pairs of briefs, three handbags, two pillow cases, a pack of pens, two towels, four pairs of earrings, five soaps and a perfume.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge before Magistrate Douglas Frederick this afternoon.

Mason also denied entering the house of Andrew Small between July 31 and August 11 with intent to steal.

Sergeant Robert Jones objected to bail based on the accused’s antecedents and the strength of the evidence against him. According to the prosecutor he has “a natural tendency to commit these crimes”.

“He was shown mercy from the court and placed on a suspended sentence in July and is back here again,” Jones added. He said if granted bail there were fears that more allegations would arise. “It seems he has no respect for other people’s property and is also on bail from this court for a similar offence.”

In his bail application Mason told the magistrate to look at his conviction card and he would see that he was in jail in 2011.

“I was in jail from 2011 to 2018. I accept that fact. I is a Barbadian from birth. I could adhere to any bail conditions. I don’t have any passport and my mother out there to sign bail for me,” the accused said.

His application was denied.

Mason returns before the No. 2 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on September 9.
