PwC team keeping it clean

Staff of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) East Caribbean (Barbados) and their families recently joined volunteers from across the country to take part in the island-wide annual Future Centre Trust Clean Up.

The focus this year was to clean a location that would make a difference to both the environment and the local community.

Many people co-exist in the natural habitats of wildlife. They live in neighbourhoods that are surrounded by nature; gullies, dense shrub and bush, tree lined pathways or even agricultural land. Understanding what impact people have is paramount to creating a better, safer, cleaner environment for everyone.

The Clean Up started at the beginning of the Barbados Trailway, behind My Lord’s Hill.

Volunteers made their way through dense bush and ivy entangled trees picking up everything from the scattered parts of an entire bed mattress and frame, to plastic and glass bottles, plastic bags, juice boxes, foil food wrappers and other more common recycling materials.

Once complete, the team moved into Licorish Village and joined another Clean Up group to help clear the road, picking up more litter and recycling materials.

The PwC group then moved further into the village and found an area that needed a lot of attention at the heart of the community.

They collected many broken empty glass bottles, plastic bottles, bicycle wheels, tyres, old broken chairs and TV’s and even a child’s electric toy quad bike.

Territory leader, Mike Bynoe said: “We have more volunteers join us each year to support the Clean Up Barbados initiative.

“It’s a testament to the growing importance of making sure we control and limit our impact on the environment.

“This year we decided on a location that would deliver on both of our PwC corporate responsibility commitments, environment and community.

“We met many of the local residents while cleaning up and had the opportunity to speak with them and tell them more about the initiative.

“They were all very supportive and appreciative of the help which made the morning even more rewarding.”

He continued: “Five years on from our first Clean Up and it’s still a key date in our corporate responsibility calendar.

“The importance of cleaning up our environment continues to be one of the biggest local problems we face and we encourage businesses and communities across Barbados to come together and help us solve it.

“It’s time to be the solution and make a difference now and for future generations.
