Best, Chase among five-wicket stars in BCA T20 Cup

Off-spinner Roston Chase claimed his third five-wicket Test haul.

Former Barbados and West Indies pacer Tino Best and current international all-rounder Roston Chase are among only four bowlers who boast of taking five wickets in a match on two occasions in the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Twenty20 Cup Championship, now in its 13th season.

Representing ESA Field Pickwick, Best grabbed six for six against his old team Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) at Paragon in 2015, and five for four against MTW at Pine Basin in 2016. Pickwick won both matches.

Chase, a Barbados Pride and West Indies batting all-rounder who bowls off-spin, picked up five for 15 for Empire against Banks (now Wildey) at The Brewery in 2012, and five for 14 against Barbados Youth at the Lester Vaughan ground, Cane Garden in 2014.

The others with two five-wicket hauls are Kevin Gittens (MTW) and Shayne Moseley (Wanderers).

In 2012, Gittens took five for 19 against LIME (now Gladiola) at Pine Basin and five for 30 against Empire at Bank Hall.

Moseley, a Barbados Pride left-hand opening batsman, showed his ability as a right-arm medium-pacer by snatching five for 26 against Spartan at Queen’s Park and five for 32 against Maple at Dayrells Road – both in 2016.

Only one bowler boasts of seven wickets in a match. Ian Boyce, an off-spinner, took seven for 16 off four overs for Combermere against Gladiola in a 26-run win at Lester Vaughan four years ago.

One beaver-trick has been recorded in arguably one of the most sensational results ever. And the player who achieved the feat, Raymond Kellman, can be considered an unlikely hero.

Better known for his batting, and bowling his only over – the very last of the match – for MTW against Banks Wildey at Pine Basin in 2013, medium-pacer Kellman, then aged 27, grabbed four for three in a five-run win. His remarkable feat started from the second ball.

Chasing 125 to win in a third round match and needing nine runs off the last over with five wickets in hand, Banks Wildey were restricted to 119 for nine. It was the first time Kellman had bowled in the Tournament for the season.

Hat-tricks have been performed by Dwayne Smith, Joel M. Leacock, Nkosi Ross, Ryan Nurse and Linton Buchanan.

Smith’s came in figures of four for 14 for YMPC against Yorkshire who lost by 151 runs at Friendship in 2012.

The same season, Leacock, a medium-pace all-rounder, took four for 39 for St. Catherine against Pickwick at Bayfield but his team lost by 17 runs.

In 2013, YMPC left-arm spinner Ross took four for 18 against MTW who were beaten by five wickets at Pine Basin.

Playing for Gladiola against Carlton at the Combermere School ground, Waterford ‘A’ in the third series of the Super 10 in 2016, fast bowler Nurse took four for 28 off four overs but Gladiola lost by 41 runs.

Also in 2016, left-arm spinner Buchanan, a Jamaican, took four for six off four overs for UWI who defeated Wildey by 105 runs at Bayfield.
