Thorne quits People’s Business

Peter Thorne

Veteran journalist Peter Thorne has quit the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) The People’s Business television programme over pay.

Thorne, who had been moderating the popular Sunday evening news and current affairs talk show since May 24 last year, did his last show on September 27, after demanding that CBC pay him more than the flat fee for presentation considering his research work, organising guests to appear on the show, and even securing of sponsorship to help offset production costs.

The senior reporter, who has 37 years’ experience in the journalism field, confirmed that he was left with no choice but to quit after his employer failed to meet his demands.

However, he told Barbados TODAY he was still willing to renegotiate a compromise agreement because he had no malice for the corporation and wanted it to succeed.

When contacted, CBC General Manager Sanka Price said it would be unethical for him to discuss Thorne’s situation in public.

The People’s Business still went on air yesterday evening, but with a new presenter. CBC reporter Cheyne Jones moderated the discussion on the emotive issue of the questionable grades from the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) in this year’s CAPE and CSEC exams.
