Online sweet treat business launched to mark World Food Day

To mark World Food Day 2020 two friends came together to launch Oh Sugar!, an online business specialising in sweet treats, pastries and desserts with a special focus on charity.

Owners Akilah Jordan-Watson and Saamiya Cumberbatch said, Oh Sugar! is the manifestation of a shared passion for baking and spreading happiness between best friends.

The two young ladies who are both 22 enlisted the help of other young people in this entrepreneurial/ charity venture who have all committed to making this launch a success.

Saamiya said, “We conceptualized this business after being asked almost a million times, “when yall gonna sell?” Persons even tried ordering from us on numerous occasions, so we figured, it was long overdue, and it was time to put our skills to use.”

“Service is integral to both Akilah and I, we did not want to exclude that from our business since our business is in and of itself, a representation of us. That’s how we came up with the idea to form a hybrid business charity. It’s a project that is both for our wellbeing but also for that of the community,” Saamiya stated.

This little Bajan phrase, similar to “Oh shoot” coupled with a zeal for service, Oh Sugar! serves as a business with a fundamental element of charity at its core.

“Amid this pandemic, persons need help more than ever so why not use what we have to generate something to brighten another person’s day? If everyone committed random acts of cupcakes, the world would be a much better place!”

The aim of the venture is predominantly focused on giving back rather than making a profit which will cater to a wide cross-section of people and their dietary restrictions.

“We wanted to give in as many places as possible: to young entrepreneurs like ourselves, to organizations trying to enact positive change and to the average person who may just need some kind of assistance. We’re shooting for the stars but hope to reach the heavens!” (PR)
