Weather Update: Barbados is now under a flood warning

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has upgraded the flash-flood watch issued earlier this morning to a flood warning that will remain in effect until 6 p.m.

A flood warning is issued when flooding due to heavy or excessive rainfall is occurring or is imminent in the warning area.

The BMS said a tropical wave was interacting with a mid to upper-level trough that has already generated up to 25mm across sections of the island in the past six hours. Additional rainfall accumulations of 25.0 to 50.0 mm in heavy to violent showers is expected as conditions remain unsettled across the island.

The forecasters have warned the public to expect – significant runoff from higher elevations. Significant soil erosion is likely on exposed or scarred land surfaces. Large water settlements on roads and fields. Significant adjustments to water levels of existing water bodies (ponds etc.). Significant delays on traffic routes with some roads possibly impassable.

Large objects or debris from higher elevations may also become embedded within fast moving water flows. Significant flooding at the foot of hillsides and coastal roads is possible.
