#BTColumn – Same-sex unions not right, not natural

I read with interest Dr Peter Laurie’s article attempting to justify the legalising of same-sex unions.

Dr Laurie is advocating that same sex unions be legalised on the basis that they are “right”.

He further stated that, “It is pointless to argue that homosexuality is ‘unnatural’ because human behaviour has gone beyond ‘what is natural’ in so many respects from medicine to money”.

If human behaviour has indeed gone beyond what is natural, then the door is wide open for pedophilia, bestiality and every form of evil thought that can enter a human’s mind.

Based on this argument, humans are therefore at liberty to do whatever they choose without any restraints or consequences. What a sad indictment of mankind!

We need only look to animals to decide what is natural behaviour. When animals want to mate, do male and male go together or female and female?

A male animal will fight almost to the death over a female with whom he wants to mate.

Is there something humans can learn from this behaviour or because of our higher level of intelligence we can go beyond what is natural with no boundaries? The laws of nature are quite clear, male and female.

If animals follow this rule, what about humans? Has homosexual behaviour ever been witnessed amoung aminals?

Science has attempted to establish that a person is born as a homosexual or that there is something in their genes or hormones which makes them behave in this manner.

To date, no link has been found because there is none and never will be.

As has now become a popular trend in our contemporary society, same-sex couples are deciding to have children. How are these children conceived? Are they conceived by male and male or female and female? I will leave the answer to that question to the advocates of “’homosexuality being natural and right”.

With reference to the Catholic Church, is Dr Laurie seriously suggesting that the Catholic Church is a moral authority?

In light of the worldwide scandals involving that Church, some of which were exposed and some that are conveniently swept under the carpet, can they really provide guidance on morality, or are they a yardstick by which society can confidently measure its morality?

There are two issues at stake in the ongoing debate regarding homosexuality/lesbianism – those persons who believe in the authority of the Bible and adhere to its teaching and those who do not.

For those persons who do, myself included, we will continue to uphold the Word of God as our moral authority, knowing that when all is said and done, the Word of God will prevail.

Those persons who do not believe in the Bible will hold to the view that humans can do whatever they please whether it is considered natural or unnatural as their moral compass has obviously become defunct.

Love, or the lack thereof, is often quoted when persons speak against homosexuality. The person who loves most of all is God. He loves the sinners but hates the sin and if He says something is sin, then it is sin.

He will never condone sin or change His mind concerning the definition of sin, despite the attempts by humans to rewrite or circumvent His laws.

Whether same sex unions are legalised in Barbados or not, one thing is certain, mankind will be subject to God’s laws whether we choose to accept or reject them. The Word of God stands forever – unchanged.
