Two armed gunmen abruptly disrupted a routine evening of business at ShopSmart Express in Worthing, Christ Church this afternoon, leaving one employee nursing a gunshot injury.

Police said they received a report just after 4 p.m. that a cashier at the establishment had been robbed and shot.

Within minutes, a team of investigators arrived at the scene and Acting Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Rodney Inniss later told reporters that a 24-year-old male employee was shot twice in the abdomen.

“Two men entered the establishment and demanded money and there was a confrontation,” Inniss said, detailing the outcome of preliminary investigations.

The victim was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

Distraught employees at the scene were reluctant to speak but one worker told Barbados TODAY it was a scary experience.

“It was something that was traumatic. It is never easy to see a co-worker get shot. We were afraid,” said the employee who did not want to be identified.

At the time of publication, police said the extent of the victim’s injuries was still unknown.

However, Inspector Inniss assured that investigations were continuing, and appealed to members of the public who had information that may lead to the capture of the culprits, who fled the scene, to call the nearest police station.
