BT Independence Feature: Alan Sheppard injecting hope through music

For those in the entertainment fraternity, the lockdown months caused a financial drought. But thanks to technology, some entertainers saw the opportunity to not only remain relevant but to try to inject some hope into the lives of their colleagues and Barbadians in general.

Enter Alan Sheppard of Spice and Company fame, now a sought-after solo performer who is known for his sold-out live performances all over the island.

Even before Barbados recorded its first cases, venues were calling one after the other to inform Alan that those shows would have to be cancelled because the risks were just too great.

“I was there, just like a lot of people, faced with shock. What should I do? After the last gig, I took the gear out of my car and set it up in my house. I set up in my studio with the equipment that I had; I had just one little camera device and I started streaming on Facebook and on my business page,” he explained.

And, as such, the brand Social Distance Party was born and would go on to run for 26 consecutive weeks, attracting the attention of fans all over the world. But what made these live shows so special was Alan’s years of entertainment prowess, bringing that feeling of a physical show to his “curfew” set by introducing the songs, talking about what made them special, and having his usual conversational approach with the audience.
