Sentencing submissions set for January

by Fernella Wedderburn

Submissions on sentencing will be made on January 22 next year when the case of manslayer Trevor Linus Baptiste continues in the High Court.

Baptiste alias Coco, of Cutting Road, Haggatt Hall, St Michael previously pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter in the September 3, 2015 death of 61-year-old Melanese Eversley.

The deceased, a general worker, was walking along Jordan Tenantry Road, St George heading to work on the day she met her death.

About 11:55 a.m. on September 4, 2015 officers received an anonymous call about a fire at Constant, St George. Fire officers responded but it was while on their way that they spotted another fire and on approach they saw what appeared to be the lifeless body of a woman lying on her back in a grassy area. The fire, which had not yet reached her body, was extinguished.

A post mortem was conducted on the body ruled that the cause of death was due to cardiac injury secondary to a stab wound to the chest. The wound was caused by a sharp object and was six inches deep. There were also multiple minor abrasions and scratches and bruising to the elbow and arm.

Director of Public Prosecutions Donna Babb-Agard Q.C. is prosecuting the case before Justice Randall Worrell. Angella Mitchell-Gittens is the defence attorney.
