Local News News Ayoni unveils powerful messages in ‘Unmoved’ Barbados Today Traffic26/01/20210245 views Almost six months to the day since the release of “Unmoved (A Black Woman Truth)” Bajan artist Ayoni returns with the powerful new record ”The Patriots” on the 27th of January. Similar to “Unmoved (A Black Woman Truth)” “The Patriots” showcases Ayoni as the voice of her generation, a young Black woman who is not afraid to challenge conventions and question the truths we are told by society. “The Patriots” that was intended to be on Ayoni’s upcoming project that she currently is wrapping up but felt that the world needed to hear “The Patriots” now. The 21-year-old Barbadian pop singer Ayoni released her debut project “Iridescent” in October 2019. The project was praised by the media and positioned her as one of the most exciting artists to enter the pop arena in recent times. A vehicle for self-discovery and healing, “Iridescent” delves into her journey through adolescence, divine femininity, and the ever-changing nature of personal peace. June 30th, 2020 “Unmoved (A Black Woman Truth)” was released and quickly labelied by Ones To Watch as ”one of the most powerful songs that has come across our desk in 2020”. The record received massive Spotify support and was included in +10 New Music Friday, POLLEN, Best Indie Songs of 2020, Fresh Finds, Sad Indie, All New Indie, Fresh Folk, Oyster and Noir to name but a few. Born in Barbados and later finding home in Singapore, Indonesia and the US, her music is lined with her experiences as a young Black woman and an immigrant navigating the world and finding her identity through it all. Playing the piano, guitar and producing, Ayoni pushes the sonic boundaries by infusing her moody and ethereal pop sound Aretha Franklin, Patrice Rushen and Frank Ocean. Her music also implores electricity and brightness as she confidently and uniquely uses genre-fluidity to speak to a world audience. Commenting on her work, Ayoni said: “. . . The Patriots, is a moment of reckoning that is long overdue for me and this nation. It marks an evolution in my artistic intention, as I’ve come to understand my responsibility to facilitate cultural conversations and reflect these times. This song has kept me up many nights, scared the living daylights out of me, held space for lifetimes of grief, and it has healed me and given me my power back. I felt my ancestors in the room the profound night I wrote this song, and they have guided me since. “This is my national anthem and gospel. The only America I’ve known is very bloody, very white, and very blue. To sing a song that has been written many times over generations, has been humbling and heartbreaking, but I proudly take my place amongst my musical ancestors in protest song tonight. “So, here is the reckoning and the first single off of my debut album. If it moves you, please be a part of spreading and sharing this message. I believe a story can change the world – help me change this one. Thank you for letting me be my biggest self. I’m transforming. All glory to The Divine and all power to the people.” Listen here: https://promo.theorchard.com/sT1ABTP45QLNaGFl1lLs (PR)
