Humphrey: Fish markets, landing sites and sheds will be closed during lockdown

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy wishes to advise the public that all fish markets, fish landing sites and sheds, as well as all Government run locations used to supply or trade in fish, will be closed for the period February 3 to February 17.

Fishing vessels are advised to return to port as soon as possible before the National Pause to facilitate the sale of their catch.

Vessel owners and operators are asked to note that no personnel will be at the markets to receive, purchase or process fish from February 3rd to February 17th.

Minister of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy, the Hon. Kirk Humphrey stated that, “the closure of the market is a necessary step to help in the fight against Covid in Barbados. It is a measure put in place to protect the staff, fishermen, vendors and general public. Of course, we will continue to work with the fisherfolk during the National Pause.”

Crews returning to home port are asked to note that if persons on board feel unwell, have a fever, cough, experience any difficulty in breathing or any COVID related symptoms, that they should separate themselves from the other crew, self-quarantine, and call the COVID-19 hotline at 536-4500 or otherwise seek medical attention.

The Minister advised vessels should stay in Port during the National Pause.

Only designated persons will be allowed to check on fishing vessels during the Pause.

Owners or registered caretakers of fishing vessels should therefore urgently submit the names of the designated persons to the Fisheries Division via fisheries.division@barbados.gov.bb.

Please note inspections of fishing vessels due in January and February, because of expiration of their inspection certificates/decals, will be re-scheduled and persons notified accordingly. The Barbados Coast Guard will be made aware of vessels awaiting certification. 2

Fisherfolk are also reminded that deposit and collection of documents at the Fisheries Division closes by 12 midday on 2nd February 2021.

The Ministry also wishes to remind everyone to follow all protocols during the National Pause. (PR)
