Lifeguards pull woman to safety at Batts Rock

A woman in her sixties had to be rescued by two lifeguards at Batts Rock Beach, St Michael on Monday afternoon.

The sea bather, who apparently cannot swim, got into difficulty when she submerged in a “drop-off channel”.

National Conservation Commission lifeguards Kyle Edwards and Ralston Duke brought the woman to safety and immediately sought assistance from the Emergency Ambulance Service.

The rescued woman was transported to a medical facility for observation.

Acting General Manager of NCC Ryan Als confirmed the incident and appealed to Barbadians to adhere to all advisories issued by the Barbados Meteorological Services.

Als also urged Barbadians to adhere to all instructions given by lifeguards and exercisea extreme caution as a result of the abnormal sea conditions.

He advised beachgoers to observe the flags posted at beaches warning them of possible or imminent danger.

Als said a yellow flag posted at a beach means sea conditions are risky and caution should be exercised when swimming while a red flag indicates that there should be no swimming at all.

The met services had warned of high surf with waves reaching as high as 10 feet in a small craft advisory that urged sea bathers to exercise extreme caution or not venture into the sea at all. (KB)
