Knife gets homeless man bonded

A bond has been imposed on a 27-yearold man who was found walking along a public road with a switchblade for “no reason”.

If Daniel Aaron Joseph, of no fixed place of abode, breaches the sentence imposed on him by Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes he will have to pay the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court a forthwith fine of $750 or spend 60 days at HMP Dodds as an alternative.

Joseph appeared before Weekes Tuesday and pleaded guilty to having the flick knife along Bank Hall Main Road, St Michael without lawful authority or excuse on March 22.

According to Sergeant Vernon Waithe, police were on patrol around 11:50 p.m. when they saw Joseph in the area of the O’Level Institute walking the footpath. They approached and questioned him about his reason for being outside his home at the time, to which he responded: “Wunna cah r******* ask me nothing”.

He then walked away and it was at that point that police noticed the knife protruding from his pocket. He was stopped, asked to account for it and replied: “That is my knife”.

He was arrested and charged.

In court, he told Chief Magistrate Weekes that while the facts of the charge are correct he “didn’t curse”.

Joseph continued: “I there going by my father. It ain’t nowhere else I had to go, so I say that was the safest place. That’s just a li’l flick knife that I does got. I ain’t had it for no reason, sir.”

Asked why he was not living with his father, Joseph said: “Me and my father don’t get along that good.”

In placing Joseph on bond, Weekes told him that his explanations did not add up.
