BWA says discoloured water is a result of outages and not ash

The Barbados Water Authority is advising the public that discoloured water which may be seen increasingly in some parishes is not a result of the volcanic ash currently impacting Barbados.

]The discolouration is caused by sediment being dislodged on the resumption of water flowing through the mains in areas that would have suffered recent outages.

The public is reminded that once there is a problem that results in water outages to an area, any sediment in the mains will settle. When pumping through the main resumes, the sediment will be dislodged and pushed out, causing discoloured water to flow through the taps initially for a short period.

This stoppage and resumption of water flow through pipes or mains that are aged, from time to time, result in discoloured water issues for some customers.

Persons experiencing this should let the discoloured water run off until clear. The discoloured water can be collected and used for secondary purposes like flushing toilets, watering plants or washing down outside areas. (BWA)
