#BTSpeakingOut – Just a few reminders

Our airport in the parish of Christ Church is not the Sir Grantley Adams airport. The Stand at Kensington Oval is not Sir Wes Hall and Sir Charles Griffith Stand. The building located near the boundary line dividing St. James and St. Peter is not the Sir Gordon Greenidge Primary school.

The school at Trent’s St. James is not the Sir Frederick Smith Secondary School Recently, an announcement in the print media informed that this year’s launch of the Barbados Manufacturers’ Exhibition (BMEX) will take place at the Sir Garfield Sobers Gymnasium.

The Government Information Service has been at pains to clarify that buildings and other infrastructure carrying the names of local Knights and Dames should not include the words “Sir” or “Dame”.

This error is now becoming a “recurring decimal”, not only in the print media but on radio and other electronic media. Our media personnel has a duty to uphold the standards as set out by protocol and convention.

Young impressionable minds are watching and listening.
