Rotaract Club gives to relief efforts

On April 8, 2021, following significant seismic activity, the La Soufrière volcano in the neighbouring islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines experienced the first of a continued series of explosive eruptions.

In response to the adverse effects of these eruptions, the Rotaract Club of Barbados decided to take a three-pronged approach to relief efforts which included a clothing and water drive, donation of sanitary products and child care items and a cash donation, between April 12 and 24.

Over this period, through contributions from its members and partners in service, the Club raised over BDS$5,000.00 which was divided between each of the three phases.

The first phase of the relief efforts was focused on the donation of clothing and clean water through a partnership with Vincentians and other partners of Oxygen Mas Band in Barbados. Joined by fellow Rotaract Clubs, Rotaract Club of UWI Cave Hill and Rotaract Club of Barbados West, 460 items were donated through the clothing drive for adults and children.

Additionally, in furtherance of the Rotary International area of focus of providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene, the Rotaract Club of Barbados donated 104 5-Litre bottles and 408 500ml bottles of water.

The Rotaract Club of Barbados West also donated a case of 500ml bottled water. Further, the Rotaract Club of South Barbados and the Rotaract Club of Barbados each donated an 800-gallon water tank through the joint Rotary Clubs of St. Vincent.

The second phase of relief efforts revolved around Rotary International area of focus, saving mothers and children, and involved a contribution to Pink Parliament and The Lady Box Project’s “Pink Box Project”.

The Rotaract Club of Barbados donated six cases of sanitary napkins, 11 dozen tampons, six cases of diapers (assorted sizes), four cases of baby wipes, three cases of antibacterial wipes and four cases of plasters.

Finally, in its third phase the Rotaract Club of Barbados made a monetary donation in the sum of BBD $2,000.00 to the Rotary District 7030 Disaster Relief Fund through its sponsor club, Rotary Club of Barbados.
