Economy Local News News Barbados on a mission to strengthen the economy, PM says Barbados Today Traffic23/05/20212422 views Barbados is currently facing an important mission to strengthen the economy and safeguard livelihoods, Prime Minister Mia Mottle said Sunday. The Prime Minister said while the Government has done well in this regard since 2018, the task is an ongoing one. “The mission that faces Barbados is a mission that requires the majority of good thinking people, and people who are committed first and foremost, to protecting those who are most vulnerable and cannot carry themselves, to lift the flooring, but at the same time to excite the opportunities for those who believe that they can soar. That they can soar to the rest of the world, and not just here,” Mottley said. The Prime Minister spoke at the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) thanksgiving service at Bennett’s Temple United Holy Church, Pie Corner St Lucy. The service, which was held in recognition of the party’s third anniversary in office after a historic landslide victory in the 2018 general elections, saw Prime Minister Mottley thanking Barbadians for allowing her administration to guide the island through one of the most daunting times in the nation’s economic history. Mottley made mention of COVID-19, saying that though the country had turned the corner in terms of case numbers staying relatively low for several weeks, Barbados was not out of the woods yet. “It is critical, not just locally but internationally. In the words of Lt Col [Jeffery] Bostic, that there should be no surrender and no retreat. As long as this awful pandemic grips the global landscape, all that we do will be challenged, and it is for that reason that it remains the primary purpose of this Government to fight it, and not to put our people at risk as we do so.” She continued: “I am satisfied that we are on that journey, I am satisfied that the challenges that we have faced have been complex and sometimes bruising, but they have not thrown us down. We stand still as a nation against those crises and challenges that threaten to undermine us. “This great nation has what it takes to be world class, but it will only happen not just with our political will, it will only happen with the will of the majority of right thinking people in Barbados.” (SB)
