REGIONAL: Three killed in industrial accident in Bahamas

Three people, including two foreigners, have died following an industrial accident while cleaning a tank filled with scrap metal.

Media reports said that the three people, a Bahamian, American and a Dominican were discovered unresponsive in a pit on a floating tank at City Services Ltd late on Tuesday.

Police have not yet disclosed the identity of the three men, but the Tribune newspaper said that one of the deceased is David Dorvile, a Bahamian of Haitian descent.

The newspaper quoted a relative of the 47-year-old dead man, who said he had received a call later on Tuesday regarding the tragedy.

The newspaper said that the tank was being cleaned at the time of the tragedy.

“The first male did not return, the second individual would have gone down to search for the first male. When he did not return, the third went down and he did not return. That caused the male from an adjacent property to come and make some inquiries and then he found three men unresponsive,” said Assistant Superintendent of Police, Stephen Rolle.

He said police had received a report of an industrial accident at the City Services property which is located in the industrial area, just north of the container port.

He said on arrival, the police found three unconscious males, who “were doing some work in the floating tank and they all became unresponsive”.

Rolle said that an employee from an adjacent property came over to assist with the removal of three lifeless bodies from the pit.

Rolle said investigations are continuing into the matter and an autopsy will be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.
