Trade lawyer heads SRC

The Shridath Ramphal Centre for International Trade Law, Policy and Services (SRC) at the Cave Hill Campus of The University of the West Indies (UWI), has a new director.

Following the retirement in August of Neil Paul, after 15 years with the UWI, the SRC has appointed attorney-at-law and trade specialist Dr Jan Yves Remy to the top post.

“Let me also say that I am proud to lead a capable team of researchers and administrative personnel who, in the words of our Vision Statement, aim to serve as beacons for excellence and creativity, dedicated to serving our students, community, region and wider world,” Dr Remy said in a recent posting on the SRC website.

Remy said she was conscious that there is much work to do, as the international global economy was fast evolving and “we in the Caribbean have to hang on for dear life, lest we become hostages to it, whether from haplessness or idleness”.

According to the new SRC director, “We at the SRC see our role as being the eyes, ears and mouth of CARICOM on all things trade.  Under our new Strategic Plan (2021-2026) which received the blessing of our Advisory Board, my aim is to advance the SRC on all three of its core pillars by updating and expanding our training products (both long and short courses) to reflect the new areas being prioritized in international and regional circles.

“[In addition, conducting research that us not only Caribbean-focused but also practical and relevant to the needs of the public and private sector; and by engaging in outreach that can reach scale thanks to the online facilities and that is invaluable to our current followers as well as exciting so that we can attract new audiences in new markets.”

Dr Remy holds a PhD in international law and was recently named the Barbados Chair under the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Chair Programme and has served as a WTO panellist under the dispute settlement arm of the WTO.  (IMC1)
