Lester Vaughan celebrating 24th year

As part of its 24th Anniversary celebrations, The Lester Vaughan School is hosting a series of seminars to assist students, teachers, and the public better understand the importance of good mental health.

There is also an innovative social media challenge where persons are asked to share their experiences during these challenging times and how they managed to “lighten the load.”

During its activities for Teachers’ Professional Day observed on October 15, the school launched the series and companion website (www.wellness.lvsrising.com).

Principal Anthony Alleyne noted that many teachers, students, and parents had expressed how challenging the current environment was for them, and he was pleased that the school could contribute to more discussion and education on issues surrounding coping, mental health and wellness.

The website contains useful information on social and mental health issues as well as advice on general well-being. It was put together by the school’s pastoral team which was established to assist with students’ social, emotional, and other needs. School Safety Officer Mrs. Franz Harewood-Hamblin conducted most of the research for the site and said she believes it can be beneficial to everyone during this time and beyond.

The Mental Health series will see professionals in the field providing tips and advice on matters such as

• Keeping Fit for Good Mental Health with coach Alwyn Babb: October 22, 2021;

• Managing Stress with Dr. JoAnne Brathwaite-Drummond: October 26, 2021

• Nutrition for well-being with Mrs. Shontelle Farrell: October 29, 2021

The school’s guidance counsellor Rosalind Gibson indicated the sessions were much needed especially during this time when many persons in the sector were undergoing some form of stress. She invited the public to attend via links on the school’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/lvsrising).

Further information on this and other anniversary events can be found on the school’s Facebook and Instagram pages.   Should you have any questions or require more details, you may contact the Principal Anthony Alleyne at 265-4853. (PR)
