Still no decision on McDowall’s reinstatement

Former president of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) Akanni McDowall will have to wait a little longer to know if he will be reinstated as a member, following his expulsion by the National Council on September 30 for allegedly bringing the union into disrepute.

A special general meeting which was slated for Wednesday evening to hear McDowall’s appeal against his expulsion, had to be aborted due to the lack of a quorum.

Acting General Secretary of the NUPW Richard Greene explained that the council will now have to re-examine the rules governing such matters to ensure McDowall is fairly treated as it seeks to determine the next step.

“We will have another meeting, but the time and date of that is to be determined,” Greene told Barbados TODAY.

In commenting on the situation, McDowall said he had hoped the issue would have been resolved to avoid going to court.

He believes his membership should be reinstated and said he would do everything he could to make that happen.

It is understood that the former president turned up at the meeting this evening with his legal representatives.

The general membership, as the highest decision-making organ in the union, is the only entity that can overturn the council’s decision to expel McDowall.
