DLP says it’s ready to rescue suffering Barbadians

The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) declared Saturday that it was ready to step in and rescue suffering Barbadians as it charged that the ruling Barbados Labour Party (BLP) had dropped the ball on several pressing national issues.

President Verla De Peiza listed spiralling debt, the high cost of living, high joblessness and rising crime among the prevailing problems at a ceremony marking its 60th anniversary of first attaining Government and the launch of its political candidates for the next general election.

“It is the task and it is the ultimate goal of the Democratic Labour Party to rescue our country,” De Peiza said as she predicted that the country was on the cusp of a general election.

Charging that Barbadians have been subjected to much optics over the last three and a half years, De Peiza voiced concerns about recent celebrations marking the country’s 55th Independence and the transition to a Parliamentary Republic, questioning the benefits to Barbadians.

“All the glitz and the glamour and the pageantry, no accounting, we don’t know how much it cost and our people are still hungry, our people still need jobs, our people are hopeless.”

“And we see that recipe for disaster, high unemployment, high cost of living and it plays itself out in the destruction of our social fabric. We watch again, again as our country slides backwards in our crime numbers and it is that indication that our country is in need of saving that galvanizes the Democratic Labour Party every single time and we rise to the challenge every single time because there must be a plan for the rescue of our people.”

De Peiza further chided the Government for favouring big business while failing to provide adequate support for householders and small enterprises.

She made clear the new look DLP team would put the needs of the people first, claiming that the party, which suffered the 30-0 drubbing in the May 2018 election, had learnt its lesson.

“You can ever be sure that the DLP has learned the lesson of that history, and that going forward we remain committed.”

She declared that the party was confining, “The present BLP administration to the annals of history as the very first one-term government in this country.

“We move with the confidence of certain knowledge that we have the people behind us,” she said.
