Foundation Key Club donates to the Geriatric Hospital

Members of the Christ Church Foundation School Key Club, who are also coincidentally members of the school’s prefect corps, donated recreational games to the Geriatric Hospital, Beckles Road, St Michael on March 26, 2022.

The donation which was a part of their Key Club Project which seeks to aid the patients residing at the hospital to be able to have an element of recreation as they age.

Speaking to the media Janine Pierre-McCollin who is the Faculty Advisor of the Christ Church Foundation School Key Club said it was heartwarming to see students eager to assist the needs of the less fortunate.

“To be honest it has been very heartwarming. I find that sometimes people use COVID-19 as an excuse to not do things but honestly, I am pleased with them as they are constantly looking at ways that they can give back to persons who may be less fortunate in one way or the other. They have not only chosen to donate to the elderly, but they have also donated to the HIV Aids Food Bank, so they are constantly thinking about helping others,” she said.

Pierre-McCollin said she was pleased with the young students who were passionate about serving others before themselves, because it was rare to see a group of young persons so eager to make a change in the society in which they live.

“Sometimes we have a lot of challenges with young people, but these are young people doing great things.”

Head girl and Lieutenant Governor Division III Caribbean Atlantic District Key Club International Destini Cummings said initially the project was going to be a division wide project for the Key Clubs, but she soon realised that the programme would be better suited for the CCFS Key Club.

“I told them that they can purchase and donate dominoes, playing cards and word puzzles which are all stuff that elderly persons enjoy. We do not want them to be inside of the hospital and not have activities which can stimulate their mind. We know that once the elderly have mental activities, it leads to them having a longer and more fulfilling quality of life,” she said.

Vice president Chelsey Thorne who presented the donation to Acting Sister of the Geriatric Hospital Veronica Grant and Senior Sister Acting Marguerite Bourne-Clarke said that through the contribution of the members of the CCFS Key Club as well as members of the Christ Church Foundation School student body, the club was able to make the generous donation.

“I was a little nervous making the presentation this morning. But in terms of planning the donation we had asked some of the members of the club to either donate the actual items or $10 in cash.

“We received a generous donation from all the club members and some from the actual school. In total it was a success, and we were able to present a generous donation to the Geriatric Hospital,” she said.

Acting Sister at the Geriatric Hospital Veronica Grant and Acting Senior Sister Marguerite Bourne-Clarke highlighted that the donation would be used to assist the patients in their holistic health and thanked the members of the CCFS Key Club for their thoughtful donation.
