Queen’s Baton reaches Barbados

The Queen’s Baton for the Birmingham 2022 Relay on Friday arrived in Barbados, the 53rd of the 72 Commonwealth nations and territories that it will stop in before the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games later this year.

Arriving from Trinidad and Tobago, the baton arrived at the Grantley Adams International Airport around 10:30 a.m. and was delivered by Trinidad and Tobago’s

Chef de Mission for Birmingham 2022, Lovie Santana.

British Deputy High Commissioner to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Craig Fulton, Barbados’ Chef de Mission for Birmingham 2022 and Vice President of Commonwealth Games Barbados Cameron Burke, and Assistant Secretary-General of Commonwealth Games Barbados Shelley-Ann Griffith were on hand for the arrival.

The Queen’s Baton, which carries a message from The Queen, is in Barbados for four days, during which it will be carried by outstanding Barbadian athletes on a journey that will touch all 11 of the island’s parishes.

It will make several stops from tomorrow, including at Bulkeley Sugar Factory in St George, the PEG Farms Nature Sanctuary in St Joseph, Cherry Tree Hill and St Nicholas Abbey in St Peter, the Historic Garrison Savannah in St Michael, South Point Lighthouse in Christ Church, and will be taken on a ride around the track at the Bushy Park Racing Circuit in St Philip.

“Barbados so far will be the only country that will have the baton in a racing car going around the track, so we’re very excited about that,” said organiser of the Queen’s Baton Relay in Barbados, Gail Craig-Archer.

She said the baton will depart Barbados for Montserrat on Monday, the 200th day of its travels around the Commonwealth.

The Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay started at Buckingham Palace on October 7, 2021, when the Queen placed her message to the Commonwealth into the baton and passed it to four-time Paralympic gold medallist and England athlete Kadeena Cox.

The baton’s global journey will conclude at the opening ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games which will run from July 28 to August 8.
