PM Mottley congratulates re-elected French President Emmanuel Macron

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has sent congratulations to French President Emmanuel Macron on his convincing election win yesterday — the first leader of that country to be reelected in 20 years.

Macron won 58.5 per cent of the votes, beating his far-right challenger, Marine Le Pen.

In a letter dispatched earlier today, Mottley said: “I am very pleased, on behalf of the Government of Barbados, to convey my warmest congratulations to you and your party on your historic re-election as the President of the Républic Française.

“Your strong victory will greatly facilitate your work, going forward, to further enhance France’s important role regionally in the European Union and also globally as a leader in the international community.

“I very much look forward to our two countries continuing our collaboration on matters of international significance, including the climate crisis and the operationalization of mechanisms to ensure appropriate climate financing.

“Also of critical importance for our global engagement is the effective implementation of the international development agenda, and cooperation in the war against global health crises such as COVID-19 and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).”

The Prime Minister also told the French president she hoped they would have the opportunity to meet on these and other important issues, including the strengthening of relations with French territories in the region, in the near future. (PMO)
