Youngster admits to having marijuana for family on cruise

A 21-year-old who told police that marijuana found in his possession was for the use of family and friends at a cruise, has been placed on a bond.

Jaquan Lamar Marshall, of Rock Hall, St Thomas must be on his best behaviour for the next six months or he will have to pay the court a $1 000 forthwith fine or spend 90 days at Dodds.

The sentence was imposed by Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes for the May 8 offence.

Marshall pleaded guilty before the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court to possession, possession with intent to supply, and possession with intent to traffic 19.87 grammes of cannabis worth $95.35.

Sergeant Randolph Boyce told the court that police were on duty along Browne’s Beach when they observed Marshall exit a vehicle with a haversack. He was in the company of several other males. They were kept under close observation and he was seen exchanging a small Ziploc bag containing vegetable matter with another man, for money.

Marshall was told of the observation and consented to a search when one was requested. A container was found with several Ziploc bags containing cannnabis.

“I duh just bring them for my friends and family that I duh going on the cruise with,” he reportedly told lawmen when asked to account for the substance.

Explaining his actions before the Chief Magistrate on Tuesday Marshall stated, “it wasn’t supposed to be that way. I am sorry. I truly apologise. I was not looking for it to turn out that way.”

Magistrate Weekes reprimanded and discharged Marshall on the supply and possession charges while he was given the bond for the trafficking offence.

“You young men need to get your act together . . . you all need to find something better to do,” the Chief Magistrate said in handing down sentence.
