#BTSpeakingOut – Bajans continue to sleep

by K.D. Lashley,

Perhaps the majority of Bajans are employed, which I doubt, or simply numb to what is happening to the folk living next door.

We are told that salary increases in the public sector are not realistic at this time. But the cost of living is skyrocketing.

Our economy is being kept afloat mainly by borrowed money and government rhetoric and not productivity. Employment opportunities are mainly to be found among persons hired to clear bush from the side of the road
and to clean drains.

Pensioners and those approaching pensionable age are living in fear as the threat to percentages of moneys already worked for remains a clear and present danger.

Promises of Chinese houses, now Guyanese houses, new stadiums, hotels, jobs, et al, are swiftly becoming urban legends.

Yet, while the picture of austerity seems evident on one side of the equation, the picture on the other side seems completely different.

There are consultants tripping over each other in almost every government or statutory department. Some MPs have received salary increases as a result of some “senior” designation.

The public relations/propaganda agency has swollen  to such a size that some employees are starting sentences only for others to finish them, so thin is their workload.

And Bajans are sleeping happily ever after becausethis is who we are.
