Shawn Spencer has music at his core

Shawn 'Spencestar' Spencer is the co-owner of Music Core

Shawn Spencer is the co-owner of Music Core. The producer, singer, songwriter and businessowner started with his business partner Jared Cox in 2014.

The former student of The St Michael School who has an Associate Degree in Electronics and Engineering from the Barbados Community College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics and Computer Science recently collaborated on a newly released song Sometimes which features prominent dancehall artiste Brutal Crankstar.

How did this collaboration come to be?

Spencer who performs under the pseudonym Spencestar said that he would always seek musical advice from Brutal Crankstar but after a music discussion they held one night he was inspired to build an instrumental and produced the concept hook and from there the collaboration between the two happened organically.

“I had this melody stuck in my head, so I quickly recorded myself singing the melody and created a chord progression around it. I decided to name the rhythm ‘full effort riddim’ and while I was creating it felt as if hands were with me assisting me create the track which is now the Sometimes rhythm. After I produced the chorus Brutal Crankstar formulated the verses around the theme which is ‘sometimes people come around the place and waste sometime’ and the rest was history. Once the track was completed, I consulted AIG media, D.U. Digital to help bring the music video concept to life before reaching out to Joe Cloudy Video Services,” he said.

Spencestar said that he knew he had a love for music, but he was unsure what part of the music industry he would become a part of.

“I always wanted to ensure that whatever music I engaged in I did to the best of my ability. So, my first experience in the entertainment industry was in production with my friend and business partner Jared Cox and I quickly realized that a lot of artistes do not write their own music. I started building my own beats and doing demos of the songs I created and would not receive any positive feedback but after seeking advice from KB Sharp of Hit Island Studio I realized that much more effort was needed with the mix of songs better for persons to have the full musical experience when they listened to a song I produced,” he said.

Spencer revealed that although Sometimes was the first track that he has featured on with Brutal Crankstar he has actually been working with Brutal in his capacity as the owner of Music Core since 2019.

However, he described the experience working with Brutal as an artiste as eye-opener.

“Brutal takes his music really seriously thus he puts one hundred per cent on each track. Collaborating with him on Sometimes I learnt a lot from him in this experience. I would thank him for believing in my talent and giving me this opportunity to shine,” he said.

He has worked with multiple artistes such as Darkus, SK, Altek and Cherish, Lonerealness, Peach Bless featuring Di Chief. He explained that the process of being a music engineer can be very time consuming but thus far he has been privileged to work with artiste who all understand the vision he has for the company.

Spencestar said that he has plans to release further music as he has already written and recorded some songs, but he is seeking to further develop the production side of his company which can be found on Instagram @musiccoretm.
