Trading fair

The Fair Trading Commission (FTC) was established on 2nd January, 2001 by the Fair Trading Commission Act.

Its remit included determining principles, rates and standard of service for regulated service providers and monitoring general business conduct.

This Commission regulates the public utilities in the island and is charged with ensuring that consumers are protected and that fair competition prevails.  As a result of this mandate any actions which seem to promote monopolistic behaviour are quick to engage its attention.

Mr Justice Christopher Blackman and his Constitution Reform Committee are currently travelling the length and breadth of Barbados engaging citizens in their endeavours to provide the framework for a new constitution. In light of all that has happened in the recent past I hope that they find it possible to include in their recommendations a commission similar to the FTC or some such legal apparatus which would be able to provide protection for citizens and regulate a monopoly government.
