Dominus tipped to dominate the Breeder’s Sprint

Dominus

By Kent Layne

The Sir David Seale-owned top class creole Dominus will be going after a ninth career win when he lines up against four other creoles in The Francis Cozier Barbados Breeder’s Thoroughbred Association Breeders Sprint Stakes and Trophy Grade 3 at the Garrison Savannah this Saturday.

The Breeder’s sprint at 1100 meters will be race 8 of an appetizing 10-race card with a purse of $30.000 plus subscriptions of $5,000. It runs off at 4 p.m.

Speedy 5-year-old Dominus, trained by Andrew Nunes, is the highest-rated horse in the field at 106, and is expected to cakewalk over his lower-rated counterparts after dominating the top-rated imported horses between last year and this year, including Sir Jimmy, Shane Doan, and stablemates Brenner Pass and Brilliant News.

Dominus who has only won at 1100 meters and has only been beaten twice at that trip in his career will be ridden by Rey Williams taking the joint top weight of 132 pounds and will break from gate 2.

Steve and Allan Madoo’s 5-year-old chestnut gelding Semper Fi defeated Dominus on Gold Cup 2020 and has been in ripping form scoring three times this year all at 1100 meters to ratings of 82.

The Robert Peirce-trained animal will be ridden by Delano Lopez carrying 132 pounds.

Sean Hall’s Joshua, an old stager at 11 years old, won the 2019 running of the Breeders Sprint but has not won since. Rated 84 and coming way down in class, he must be in with a placing chance after running with higher-rated Importeds. Joshua is drawn 4 and Deshawn Gaskin will ride carrying 132 pounds.

Horse number 5 Trojan from the Gay Smith stable has not raced for 160 days but should run in the money. The Edward Walcott-trained animal will ride from gate 5 with jockey Antonio Bishop taking 132 pounds.

The Code rounds off the field.

My selection is Dominus, Semper Fi, Joshua and Trojan. Post time for race 1 is 12:30 pm.
