As we all know, Independence Day 2022 was a very special day for Barbados. Having formally made the transition from Great Britain on 30th November 2021, Barbados became a Republic.

This new political status realised the sovereignty which distinguished Barbadian novelist and profound Caribbean thinker, George Lamming, advocated in his plethora of lectures, and envisioned for the island archipelago in his 1960 novel, Season of Adventure.

It was my pleasure to be in Barbados on the 30th November this year – it was my first visit to Barbados – to witness the Independence Day Parade and to participate in the celebrations. It was a very special day. From one Caribbean citizen to another, I say, “Happy Independence Day Barbados!”
