Meals programme feeds hundreds

Scores of less fortunate Barbadians continue to benefit from the various Salvation Army programmes.

On Wednesday 350 people participated in the eagerly anticipated Christmas hot lunch initiative at the organisation’s Reed Street headquarters in The City and through the Meals on Wheels programme.

Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board Paul Bernstein said volunteers reported as early as 4:30 a.m. to prepare the meals for the initiative and by 12:30 p.m. more than 100 lunches were distributed.

Divisional business manager Sherma Evelyn reported that the Meals on Wheels programme had grown. Last year only 40 people were catered to while 75 people were given meals this time around.

She indicated that single mothers with as many as seven children visited the organisation to receive lunches.

Meanwhile, Evelyn said the Salvation Army’s Kettle Appeal which this year has a target set of $750 000, had so far raised $626 232.

The officials appealed to various businesses and individuals to continue supporting the non governmental organisation so it could reach any more people in need through its hamper donation and other charitable work. (SZB)
