Pele a football genius

The Barbados Football Association (BFA) wishes to extent its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Brazil football legend Pele who passed away yesterday at the age of 82.

Pele, considered the greatest footballer the world has ever seen, is the only player to win the coveted FIFA World Cup trophy three times in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

The iconic forward was one of the most successful sporting figures in the 20th century. BFA president Randy Harris said the joint all-time top goal scorer (77) for five-time world champions Brazil will truly be missed.

“It is a dark day for football in the world. Yesterday, the sport lost a legend and perhaps the greatest footballer to ever step foot on a field.

“Pele was magical to watch and mesmerized spectators whenever he graced the pitch,” Harris said.

“My fondest memory of Pele was at the 1958 World Cup when he became an international superstar at age 17 after helping his country to win the title with several important goals including two in the final.

“The football fraternity will agree that Pele’s death leaves a massive void in the sport, he defines the history of football and was a genius with the ball at his feet, may he rest in peace,” the BFA president added.
