Tudor Rose tipped for Race 7

By Kent Layne

The Melrose Stable-owned Tudor Rose looks a class above her other five counterparts in The New Year’s Day Handicap, the prep race for the Tanglewood Stakes, slated for this Monday at the Garrison Savannah.

The New Year’s Day Handicap going 2000 meters or 10 furlongs is worth $17,000 and is race seven on the eight-race card and slated to run at 4:50 p.m.

Tudor Rose, a winner of three of her last 10 starts, was victorious at that time in 2022 in her third start for the year on June 25th in the Queens Park Handicap, taking the second top weight of 123Ibs. She broke straight to the lead but was passed and then settled in second before overtaking the lead to defeat Mumbai by a length.

Turned out by 2022 champion trainer Robert Peirce, Tudor Rose then returned on August 6 to finish third at the sprint trip of 1100 meters behind Right On Time, then having back to back wins on August 20 and September 3. Tudor Rose will be ridden by 2022 champion jockey Teshawn Hazelwood out of Gate 6.

The second highest rated horse in the field at 56 Rainbow Warrior, behind Tudor Rose (64), is a winner of three of six career starts and is seeking to book a place in this year’s Tanglewood Stakes.

Owned by Margo Atkinson, Rainbow Warrior who didn’t place in his other three starts, has faced Tudor Rose twice in his career. He defeated the mare for his second scalp at 1800 meters on June 11th, a distance Tudor Rose has won at twice in 2022.

The Kenny John-trained Rainbow Warrior finished sixth of nine starters in the Day of National Significance Handicap on August 20 at 1800 meters.

Antone Perch has the ride and will carry 123 pounds out of Gate 4.

Barbadian athlete Levi Cadogan’s seven-year-old gelding Filmores finished third behind Rainbow Warrior in its last start on December 10 at 1570 meters, defeated by a neck.

Filmores had one win in 2022 but three third place finishes during the year – two behind the inform Cabalito who defeated Tudor Rose on Boxing Day.

The Jonathan Simpson-trained animal is rated 52 and should be a danger.

The experienced Ricky Walcott has the ride carrying 116 pounds out of Gate 3.

Horse No.1  Michal, a second runner for Robert Peirce, won over Mumbai at 1800 meters on November 26, then had a disappointing fifth place last race day behind Ares who is stablemate to Rainbow Warrior.

Michal should enjoy the 2000 meters as she finished fourth in the 2022 Derby at the trip.

Eric Daniel has the ride carrying 110 pounds.

MY SELECTION: Tudor Rose, Rainbow Warrior, Filmores, Michal.

Post time for Race 1 is 1:30 pm.
