Light & Power employees brighten communities through 12 Days of Giving

This Christmas season was truly bright for several communities as a result of employee volunteerism at The Barbados Light & Power Company (Light & Power). Under the customary “Brighten Your Christmas” theme, employees were able to assist the vulnerable and bring joy, wherever possible, to persons in need of upliftment. This effort, though no small feat, was worth the many smiles it brought to faces across Barbados.

New to the “Brighten Your Christmas” calendar of activities this year was the ‘12 Days of Giving’ project, which commenced on December 10. Each day, employees from a different parish supported a cause in their communities. According to Government Relations and Communications Manager Jackie Marshall-Clarke, “Our employee teams looked deep within the areas where they lived to decide which need they wanted to address and they enjoyed working together to make it happen. We appreciated all the hours volunteered for helping, meeting families, shopping, making hampers and everything else required for their presentations.”

The St Thomas employees chose to assist a family with needed material to repair their roof. In St Andrew, a stove was purchased for The Dacosta Edwards Primary School to assist them with morning meals for children who didn’t have breakfast. The St Lucy employees chose to support a nursing home with toiletries for the residents, while employees from St James helped two schools with sports equipment for children.

Across many other parishes, hampers and groceries were handed to persons in the communities desiring help. According to St George employee Joan Griffith, “We feel so much joy in our hearts knowing we can help others – to let them know that they are loved. There is so much joy in giving.”

On the twelfth day of giving, employee volunteers boarded a bus and hit the road to donate gifts to families recommended by The Precious Touch Foundation, The Prison Fellowship and their colleagues.

Light & Power’s employees have fully endorsed the concept of volunteerism and have become a meaningful part of the Company’s Corporate Social Responsibility programme. This Christmas season, the Company’s commitment to supporting the communities where they live and work, truly came alive through the willingness of its employees to respond with action to the question “How can we help?” (PR)
