Charities get donations to help less fortunate

Two local charities recently benefitted from a giveback initiative by the Allied Masonic Degrees District of South and East Caribbean.

Earlier this week, the Right Worshipful District Grand Prefect of the Order Richard Mayers and District Grand Director of Ceremonies Maurice Gaskin donated produce and money to assist the Salvation Army and Slow Food Kitchen in their charitable work which includes feeding programmes for the less fortunate.

The fraternity leaders gave five boxes of sweet potatoes, two boxes of cooking bananas, two bags of pumpkins, and a cheque for $1 000 to the Salvation Army.

Slow Food Kitchen received four boxes of sweet potatoes, two boxes of cooking bananas and two bags of pumpkins. 

Brother Mayers said he had pledged to provide foodstuff to Slow Food Kitchen on a monthly basis, and for the past 13 months, they were being supplied with items for their Wednesday soup special which feeds as many as 250 people weekly.

“There are a number of disadvantaged people in Barbados who do not know where their next meal will come from so it is important to show those people that we as a society care and are willing to help,” he said.

The community giveback programme of the Allied Masonic Degrees District of South and East Caribbean has been ongoing for more than eight years. (SZB)
