Be prepared, tough times ahead: DLP

In reflection of this year’s Errol Barrow Day, President of the Democratic Labour Party, Dr Ronnie Yearwood, has called on Barbadians to reflect on the life and teachings of National Hero, the Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow, as well as to brace for what he sees as a difficult period ahead.

Speaking to Barbados TODAY during the DLP’s Errol Barrow Day Celebrations held at the party’s George Street headquarters, under the theme George Street Comes Alive: Barrow’s Vision Revisited & Revived Spontaneous Reflections, Yearwood said that the day was not only an important one to the party but to the entire nation.

“It’s a time that we can unite and celebrate the Father of Independence. Obviously, Errol Barrow is important to us as a party, but really he was the party’s gift to Barbados, so we all celebrate this day together,” he said.

While not seeking to take away from the importance of the national holiday, Yearwood did insist that it was his view that the country had some difficult periods ahead, with the high cost of living still being a major concern to his party.

“Barbados is in the top four highest cost-of-living [countries], grouped with Bahamas and Switzerland and the like, so that is obviously a big concern for us.

“The Government’s economic growth strategy is a big concern because we are not seeing one … We are just getting a lot of tales, Anansi stories and fairytales from the Prime Minister and the Barbados Labour Party, but we know the tourism numbers are not doing well, we know we don’t see a growth strategy.”

Yearwood also once again questioned the delays and lack of information surrounding promised capital works projects such as Sam Lord’s Castle, the Hyatt Hotel and others, and implored Barbadians to brace themselves for a tough road ahead. (SB)
