BHTA still waiting for meeting on increased taxi fares

The Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) is still awaiting a meeting with government officials to discuss the new taxi rates.

The BHTA had requested a meeting after the rate hike, some by as much as 100 per cent, took effect on January 7, 2023.

Chairman Renee Coppin had said that while the association supported taxi operators getting their first hike in 15 years, there were implications for contracts that were already in place for transportation based on the previous rates, and seaport, airport, tours and hotel transfers which are included in holiday packages would be affected.

“Our appeal was for a delay in the implementation of the increase for persons with set rates who are engaged in the execution of contracts with third parties for the delivery of transportation services. We read in the media that there would be no consideration of this call and at present we continue to await word on a requested meeting with the Ministry of Transport and Works to gain clarity on a number of issues in relation to the increase,” Coppin said on Thursday.

The BHTA chairman stressed the importance of having the meeting.

“This industry is one that is very interconnected and so decisions taken often have far-reaching consequences. Taxis form part of the first impression of our island and are an integral part of our tourism product and we will therefore continue to work with our taxi partners and all stakeholders to ensure the best possible service to our mutual guests,” she said.
