University students told to prepare for new global normal in the world of work

Professor Clive Landis, Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, wants university graduates to remain resolute, steadfast and committed to adapting to the changing work environment.

Addressing the Students Awards 2023 ceremony on Wednesday evening at the campus Professor Landis’ told the students that critical thinking within a skilled workforce remains of paramount importance in the global arena.

“While some professions have been phased out, we are seeing a proliferation of emerging new careers. This creates demand for a skilled workforce equipped, above all, with critical thinking, analytical competencies and the ability to discriminate and solve interdisciplinary problems.

Professor Landis acknowledged that the theme for the ceremony ‘Resolute and Resilient’ was fitting considering the journey over the last few years.

“Much like this institution you have chosen to persevere and pursue academic excellence despite the challenges surrounding you. You too are ‘Resolute and Resilient’. The world has changed considerably in just a few short years. The demands set by the pace of development have resulted in drastic changes in industry and business and the ways in which we work,” he said.

“As a global university rooted in the Caribbean, this institution stands ready to meet the demands of the new global normal and you the students will be part of that next generation workforce. Already you are proving that you are worthy catalysts capable of driving economic development and adding significant value to our immediate communities and further afield.”

While commending the students who were all the recipients of a number of scholarships, he implored them to take full advantage of the opportunity the award brings.

“Students, you are here because others have chosen to invest in higher education and essentially your future. This is life-changing. You have benefitted from this support and when the time comes, I urge you to reach back and assist future students to benefit from your support in turn.
