AG gives brief update on Joe’s River Bridge controversy

The Joe’s River Bridge controversy that resulted in St Joseph residents facing off against a developer in court is nearing an end.

Word of this from Member of Parliament and Attorney General Dale Marshall, who on Monday gave a brief update on the impasse over Ullswater Investments Limited’s construction of concrete columns that residents say will impede their access to key areas in the community.

“That is very near to settlement; we’ve had a number of meetings with the developer. I think now that they have put forward a proposal, the community has to buy into it, but I think that there is an element of give and take on both sides. We value development, but we also have to value our heritage rights, and sometimes there is a challenge because one seems often to be in conflict with the other.

“I think by reaching an amicable settlement with Joe’s River, it will demonstrate that progress and history don’t have to be in conflict,” he told the media on the sidelines of the annual Parris Hill, St Joseph kite flying competition.

Marshall also disclosed that another meeting between all parties is currently in the works in a bid to put all concerns to rest. (SB)
