Annual kite flying competition returns at Parris Hill, St Jospeh

The Parris Hill, St Joseph annual kite flying competition returned to its Andrew’s Sugar Factory location in fine style on Monday following a break due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The last three years because of COVID, we have not been able to host this event . . . so there is a spirit of renewal to be able to come back to normalcy. This has been the highlight for this normally sleepy district, and it really showcases the talent and brings people to St Joseph, which is what we want . . .” Attorney General and MP for the area Dale Marshall told the media.

Marshall hopes this event and other similar activities will boost interest in the local kite-making craft.

“I think having this will create interest in the indigenous art and indigenous culture. I saw a primary school had a kite flying [event] last week, and every kite was a bat kite. I thought to myself it’s a nice effort, but what a shame that every kite that was there was not made by our local hands; it was bought out of a store in town. “This is going to point us in the right direction, I hope.”

Meanwhile, Ryan Brathwaite, owner of Ticketlinkz Inc, who was one of the major sponsors of this year’s event was pleased with the turnout.

“I am happy to be part of this event as a sponsor, and it’s good to see businesses from the community getting involved in these events because community spirit is very important. You have a corporate responsibility to ensure these events continue year over year,” he said.

During the event, a massive kite of around 20ft was flown briefly, much to the delight of patrons. (SB)
