New home for St Lucy resident

Tyrone Murphy's studio residence built by the Democratic Labour Party St Lucy branch. The DLP’s St Lucy branch also built this home for blind and double-amputee Carmen Murphy.

After living in a horse stable for five years, Tyrone Murphy now has a place to call home.

The St Lucy Branch of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) presented Murphy with the keys to his new residence at Well Road, Pie Corner, St Lucy. It was the second of two homes built by the branch for the Murphy family who lost their home to fire days before the May 24, 2018 election.

The supervisor of the project, Retired Senior Superintendent of Police Morgan Greaves, explained that like the home of Tyrone’s mother, Carmen Murphy’s house, his structure was built with cash and in-kind contributions from churches, businesses, and branch members.

He extended gratitude to all the donors who saw the project through to fruition.

“This shows what a community that cares can do for their brothers and sisters in need. I want to thank everybody, especially the churches in St Lucy, who pitched in to make this project a success,” Greaves said.

In March this year, blind double-amputee Carmen Murphy received the keys to a three-bedroom house, also at Well Road, which she will share with her daughter Christine Murphy and grandchildren.

President of the DLP Dr Ronnie Yearwood said the construction of the two houses was the party’s way of responding to Barbadians’ call to “get back into the communities”.

“The people told us to get back into the communities, show you care, be with the people. Well, we listened,” he said.

“The DLP is resetting, renewing and looking to the future. It is a long, hard journey, but we are committed to it. We want to encourage all Bajans to join us as we reconnect all over Barbados.”
