Staff from the Technology, Infrastructure & Innovation Department at CIBC FirstCaribbean have answered the call to help supply fans for students at our schools with the initial donation of four high velocity fans to the third forms at the Deighton Griffith Secondary School. Even before the appeal was made on a national level, Form Teacher Shenice Murray who was looking for water bottles for her students reached out to a contact at CIBC FirstCaribbean hoping that they had some branded water bottles that she could procure for her students as a welcome back to school gift. Since they didn’t have the numbers required following a recent promotion, they offered to help in another way as she explained that her classroom can get really hot and maybe some fans would help. Fast forward to the first day of school when the 20” high velocity fans, designed for industrial use were delivered and installed by the school’s maintenance team. Then on day two, the team from the bank turned up to check on the installation and speak with the students. While discussing the fans, the consensus was that each form could use a second fan and so the team went off to get four more fans for the other two 3rd form classrooms. Deputy Principal Martha Russell commented on the quietness of the fans because noisy fans would have disturbed the studying in the room. Asked how they were beating the heat, Murray said that some parents had donated fans for some classes and some teachers actually walked with their own fans just to keep cool. In order to encourage her students to drink water and be mindful of the heat, Murray and her class have adopted the slogan ‘Stay Cool at School’. Principal Major Michael Boyce thanked the members of the Technology, Infrastructure & Innovation Team for their generous donation stating: “We are very grateful for the assistance and for remembering us at this time. Deighton Griffith is known for its civic engagement, and we always want the students to do more and I believe that this gift will help to encourage them to go out and do more in their community.
