Massy launches self-checkout machines at Warrens location

Officials at Massy Stores Barbados Ltd continue to invest in technology, giving shoppers more options when checking out while ensuring that they are keeping up with the latest global trends.

On Saturday, six self-checkout machines were opened at the Massy SuperCentre Warrens location. And customers wasted no time in getting in line to help themselves to the new checkout options, some with help from Massy team members.

This is the second Massy Stores location at which officials have implemented the self-checkout option. In July this year, Massy Stores opened six of the self-checkout machines at its sprawling Sunset Crest location.

Senior Vice-President and Chief Executive Officer of Massy Stores Barbados Ltd Jared Wright told Barbados TODAY it has been “a success” at the Sunset Crest location, and plans are on the cards for more to be introduced at the other Massy locations in the coming months.

“We found that customers love the option. If you want to go in and get out quickly, you can use the fast lane. If you want to engage your favourite cashier and have the full service of our shopping checked out we have that option as well.

“So what we are really trying to do is give our customers options and that is what you can look forward to here [in Warrens] as well… So it is really about giving customers options and keeping ahead of the times as with what is happening globally … you can expect others at other locations. You can also expect it at our SkyMall location eventually, Coverley, our Worthing location eventually and Oistins. So you will see more being rolled out over the coming months ,” he said.

Wright said it was critical that the supermarket stay abreast with technology in an effort to meet the demands of the increasingly aware and demanding customers.

“We realise that customers travel. They experience the US and the UK and they see different things and different options. We have also been doing that in our product selections. So you will find, especially in our Sunset Crest location and here [in Warrens], a lot more ‘free-from’, gluten free and specialty products,” he said.

“So we have not only kept up with the times in terms of technology. But this is just really our effort to keep ahead and keep pace globally,” said Wright.

During the official launch of the self-checkout counters on Saturday, several Massy Stores partners were on hand to promote their products and offer shoppers samples of some items.

Wright said since the start of this year, Massy has been using various opportunities to celebrate customers and Saturday’s launch was a continuation of that.

“What we are really trying to do is give back to our customers. We really appreciate them stopping with us over the years. So this is really an opportunity to celebrate them as well,” he said.
