Update: Police probe accidental death at port

The opening of the Bridgetown Port has been delayed following what is being investigated as the accidental death of an employee early this morning.

Police had said they received a report that a container had fallen on an employee, but while confirming the incident which occurred around 5:25 a.m., a statement issued by Barbados Port Inc. did not give the details.

“At this time, we have established that the incident occurred during a cargo vessel operation. There has been one fatality reported,” it said.

“As a result of this incident, the opening of the Port of Bridgetown will be delayed today,” it added.
The port management said it was “devastated at this loss, as the safety of our employees is always our primary priority”.

“We are in contact with the victim’s family and we are doing everything we can to support them. We are also providing counsel for our employees.

“Barbados Port Inc. is co-operating with the authorities as investigations into the incident continue. Further updates will be provided as information becomes available,” the statement added.
